Dr. Rachel Potek

I’m Dr. Rachel Potek. I provide a safe, compassionate, and nurturing environment for my clients, whether they be adults working through trauma or families seeking support for a child.

I have worked in the United States and abroad, developing a special interest in international mental health and school-related issues. Drawing primarily from evidence-based modalities such as CBT, DBT, and mindfulness, I have focused my therapy work primarily on anxiety disorders, trauma, depression, adjustment disorders, and navigating major life changes for people of all backgrounds.

I also have a passion for neuropsychological assessment because, when needed, it can be instrumental to pinpoint why a child is struggling, to highlight strengths, and to implement focused and effective strategies to help the child see more success in school and in life.

I received my psychology doctorate from New York University and am licensed in New York State. Through my research, I helped to pilot a school-based mindfulness curriculum to support adolescents with anxiety and stress management. I completed my clinical training with a joint experience between St. Luke’s/Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and the Muhimbili University Hospital of Tanzania.

While in Tanzania, I was instrumental in developing and writing curriculum for the first-ever master’s of psychology in the country. I also provided consulting and treatment services to people from international organizations such as the Peace Corps, the United Nations, several different international embassies, and other organizations and schools. My work included conducting comprehensive assessments for children and families living abroad and providing therapy to local and international communities.

Prior to my time abroad, I worked as a psychologist in a variety of school and clinical settings in New York City. I also previously trained as a bilingual educator and hold a master’s in bilingual education from Bank Street College in New York City. I have more than 10 years of experience as a teacher in rural Wisconsin, Mexico, Guatemala, and New York City. My range of experiences helps me easily relate to and appreciate clients from many different backgrounds.
